This virtual lab studies motion with constant acceleration, using the classic Shoot-the-Monkey. No real monkeys are harmed in the lab.

ShootTheMonkey

Position the monkey on the screen by dragging. Clicking the reset button sets the clock to zero. Pressing the spacebar fires the gun, which is at the same height as the monkey in this lab.

Plan to write your lab report following the template described in the Example lab report.

Procedure

Conduct at least two experiments with the monkey. For each, choose a starting location for the monkey by dragging the monkey, and a speed for the bullet using the slider. Choose these so that the bullet hits the monkey before the monkey reaches the ground. Record the time, the position of the bullet, and the height of the monkey at 1/2 second intervals.

Graph the -coordinate of the bullet vs time. At each time, estimate the speed of the bullet in the -direction. Show how you estimated the speed.

Graph the height of the monkey vs time.

For each time, estimate the speed of the monkey, and graph the estimated speed vs time. Show how you estimated the speed.

For each time, estimate the acceleration of the monkey, and graph the estimated acceleration vs time. Show how you estimated the acceleration.

Answer these questions in the results section of your lab report:

  1. What do you notice about the speed of the bullet in the -direction?
  2. What is the relationship between the height of the monkey and the height of the bullet at any given time?
  3. If the monkey does not hit the ground first, will the bullet always it the monkey? Why?
  4. What is the relationship between acceleration and time? Express as an equation.
  5. What is the relationship between velocity and time? Express as an equation.
  6. What is the relationship between height and time? Express as an equation.
